- Red spinel is valued chiefly on colour, size and clarity — vivid, saturated reds in larger sizes command the highest price per carat, yet red spinel typically costs a fraction of a comparable ruby. - Is red spinel a good investment?
- Fine red spinel has seen strong, sustained collector demand: it is rarer than ruby in top colours, almost always untreated, and supply from historic sources such as Burma is limited. As with any gem, colour, condition and certification drive long-term value.
- Is red spinel the same as ruby?
- No — they are different minerals. Ruby is corundum; spinel is magnesium aluminium oxide. Historically the two were confused (several crown-jewel 'rubies' are in fact spinel), but the finest red spinel rivals ruby in beauty while remaining untreated and more attainable.
