How can you tell spinel and rubellite apart with a loupe?

The fastest gemmological separator is single versus double refraction. Look through the table of the stone at the back facets under a 10x loupe: rubellite, being doubly refractive, will often show the rear facet edges appearing as two crisp parallel lines, while spinel shows a single, clean edge every time.

That doubling is a direct consequence of tourmaline's birefringence of roughly 0.018 to 0.020 — high enough to be visible to the naked eye in cleaner, larger stones. Spinel, sitting in the cubic system, has zero birefringence and therefore can never double, no matter the size.
